Control of Major Accidents and Hazards (COMAH)

Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances.

Background

This Directive, the 'Seveso II" Directive, is the result of a fundamental review of Directive 82/50/EEC, the 'Seveso' Directive. Its aim is to prevent major accidents involving certain dangerous substances, and to limit their consequences for people and the environment. Seveso II was adopted on 9th December 1996 and published in the Official Journal of the European Communities (reference L10/13) on 14th January 1997.
