Colin Wainwright – March 1938 – January 2023
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Colin Wainwright, on Monday, 16th January.
Colin was Director of the Association for 26 years under it’s former guises of the British Chemical & Dyestuffs Traders Association (BCDTA) and following a name change in 1980, the British Chemical Distributors’ & Traders Association (also known as BCDTA).
In 2006 the Association underwent a third name change and became the Chemical Business Association (CBA) that you all know today Colin brought to the Association his administrative experience of Trade Association work and an understanding of the EEC in Brussels.
As the second longest serving Director of the Association and one of only six who have held that position in the last 100 years, Colin’s tenure saw many changes but probably his lasting legacy will be bringing the Association into the Responsible Care programme in 1993, a global initiative that continues to go from strength to strength
Colin went to High Wycombe Grammar School before going on to do his National Service with the RAF. He then worked for Hoover Washing Machines prior to joining the BCDTA in 1977 where he initially worked out of our London office and then Croydon, after the offices moved.
Although Colin retired from BCDTA in 2002, he went on to form his own company with his wife, Quince Products, however his great passion was singing. He met his wife Elspeth whilst performing in Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado‘ and sang for many years both in choirs and as a soloist, including at his local church, of which he was Church Warden for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and two step-daughters
