CBA WELCOMES POTENTIAL ACCESS TO CHEMICALS…

CBA WELCOMES POTENTIAL ACCESS TO CHEMICALS DATABASE

4 March 2020

The Chemical Business Association (CBA) has welcomed the UK Government’s intention to ‘agree data sharing mechanisms’ through its Brexit negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Peter Newport, CBA’s Chief Executive, said, “This is a positive step forward and will be welcomed by the UK chemical supply chain. It is an approach CBA has advocated as the simplest and most cost effective method of maintaining chemical safety and animal welfare.”

“In addition to avoiding multiple registrations for the same substance and the wasteful duplication of databases, the sharing of data supports continuing high safety, health, and environmental standards,” he added.

The original EU REACH legislation (Article 120) envisages such a co-operative third country relationship with the objective of achieving a wider and improved regulatory framework for chemicals.

CBA also welcomes the Government’s intention to look beyond Brexit towards further co-operation on the Global Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of

Chemicals as well as the commitment to develop a memorandum of understanding similar to that the European Chemicals Agency has agreed with Australia and Canada.
