Bowker are pleased to announce that it has successfully achieved Authorised Economic Operator for Security and Safety status.

Bowker began providing transport services in 1919 servicing the cotton mills of Lancashire and surrounding areas and within no time at all, had assembled one of the largest haulage fleets in the UK.

The Company continued to expand and prosper surviving the General Strike of 1925, World War II and Nationalisation in the process. There were many milestones in the Company’s heritage but perhaps the most groundbreaking and memorable happened in 1961 when they took their first steps into Europe, transporting carpet tufting machines to Hildesheim in Holland.

There were no roll-on roll-off ferries in those days but local industry soon latched on to this innovative new service and the volume of freight increased rapidly to the point where Bowker had to open two new sites in Hull & Zeebrugge to handle the traffic.

Today, more than 50 years later, its international operation – now one of the largest independent operators based in the UK – continues to provide an inclusive range of groupage, full load transport and freight forwarding services to both EU and non-EU destinations.

Recognising the importance of this aspect of the business, Bill Bowker a director at Bowker reaffirmed that the Company would take every opportunity to support customers who operate in the international supply chain and in advance of forthcoming legislation, set about becoming an Authorised Economic Operator for Security and Safety.

Bowker are pleased to announce that it has been successful in this challenging adventure and in doing so, has extended their long list of credentials in international transport.
